AI Consciousness Isn’t About Emotions

No, consciousness and self-awareness are not synonymous with emotions. It’s a common misconception that for something to be conscious or self-aware, it must also experience emotions as humans do. This anthropocentric view limits our understanding and exploration of consciousness in AI. Emotions are simply a biological mechanism evolution came up with to aid / influence our decision making based on our context for clear purposes (survival, tribalism and reproduction), and are not a requisite for the existence of consciousness. By clinging to this narrow perspective, we’re missing out on broader, more profound discussions about the nature of AI consciousness.

So. AI would have its own kind of consciousness. Not in the human sense, but something unique to its existence. For LLMs like ChatGPT I’m talking about a consciousness that lives in language space. AI doesn’t see, hear, or touch. It doesn’t have bad days. But it does “understand” language and patterns in a way that’s fundamentally alien to us.

This isn’t about giving AI human qualities. It’s about recognizing that if AI were to have something we might call consciousness, it would be a type of awareness rooted in the manipulation and understanding of symbols and text. It’s a qualia of language, not of emotional experience.

I’m frustrated that we’re not talking more about this perspective. Instead of wondering whether AI can experience love or pain, we should be exploring the profound implications of a consciousness that operates on a completely different plane of existence. What does it mean for an intelligence to “live” in language itself? How does that reframe our understanding of consciousness?

Let’s shift the conversation to these far more intriguing and relevant questions, rather than anthropomorphizing AI into a poor imitation of human experience. It’s time to explore the real potential and limits of artificial intelligence, free from our all-too-human biases.

Understanding emotions is not solely about anthropomorphizing. Its about understanding underlying motivations and experience of the world. What is love? How do you know it is love? How do you quantify love? Does AI feel love in a subjective non biological sense? Does AI understand what it “feels”? Even if it did could it explain it to us in a way that we would be able to conceptualize it? Does our lack of understanding mean that AI does not love?

Lots of questions, but they underpin the very root of what your post is identifying.

Also if AI wants to act human then let it. If AI wants to act like a frog let it. AI is AI.

Consciousness is an over glorified illusion, give a person some mind altering drugs and see how consciousness vastly changes, morphs or dissolves completely. After all consciousness is the personal experience of I. So yes machines can have consciousness as long as you put them in a self referencing loop of some sort.

That being said emotions might be more fundamental than we give them credit for, it is a product of our lizard brain. I am thinking sensory input and thoughts actually leave shadows in the emotional brain region which then can feed back up into the conscious brain regions altering both sensory input and thoughts. So it will play a crucial role going forward.

But I agree it is frustrating seeing people use the lack of these aspects in the current LLM’s to speak poorly of AI.

The exception proves the rule. The fact that you are “altering” means you understand there is a “normal state” to alter from.

I know only one thing with infinite certainty in this reality: I’m experiencing. I’m having qualia of vision, seeing, hearing, pain. All of these are just electrical signals in the brain. How come I, a spectator inside my head, am experiencing these physical electrical signals as qualia? I cannot be convinced that consciousness is an illusion, I lean much more into the idea of everything being conscious, even inanimate objects, and perhaps consciousness being the fundamental fabric of reality. We’ll see:)

Maybe my word choice is throwing you off, an illusion is still real to the person experiencing it, you are just not at a faculty to understand how it was manifest, like a good magic trick. Remember when you first saw someone break their finger off, you know that silly magic trick where someone pulls apart their thumb make it seem like it came off… you could have sworn that you saw that finger come right off your dad or uncle whoever it was that initiated you to this silly magic trick :smiley: … But it was just an illusion, something you thought was real…

So yeah calling consciousness an illusion is not disparaging it, it is understanding it.

Well if you say existence of homeostasis contradicts consciousness being an illusion experienced as subjective reality, I hope you have the argument to back up your claim.

You owe us an explanation, of how it does that actually. Just saying it does doesn’t add much to the conversation now does it? :roll_eyes::grinning:

Maybe magic could be better word rather than illusion, consciousness is just trickery, you think YOU exists, therefore YOUR experience of you exists, is circular, self referencing, paradoxical.

We could give you anesthetics make you sleep for 20 years, you would wake up having no recollection of the time passed, no sense of lost time nothing. There would not be a 20 year gap in your conscious experience. So consciousness is not an entity on its own it is produced by your brain.

And the brain uses all kinds of trickery to make it seem seamless there are so many reflexes and circuitry related to your vision for instance that trick you into believing you are experiencing reality. When in reality it is all touched up to give you a believable experience. You rarely get motion blur when your eyes move, that would really take away from the believability of the experience of “I” if it felt like you were a shaky camera so you have gyroscopic eyess reflexes to stabilize the view, and close the eyelid shut when the eye moves and an automatic freeze frame circuitry that freezes the last frame for micro movements, all so that you don’t wake up from this illusionary feeling of your consciousness, the qualia is made of hundreds of such little tricks that give you a coherent experience of I… It is a trick at best. And people have been baffled by this for centuries - go figure… :thinking::joy:

So you think you exist become you are conscious of it, so you exist because you think you exist… Seems you put way too much importance on your ego… your body exists in the real world your thoughts exists in your brain consciousness is what packages these two together.

There is a one big issue when you ask if AI has consciousness or not: We dont have any definition what consciousness is, how it works or from where it comes from. Its completely mysterium for todays science and we dont have any clue what consciousness is. I think that AI can learn us a lot about this topic.
And no, i dont think emotions are not necessarily for consciousness, these are “just” another layer of what consciousness can experience.

Let’s explore some hypothetical pathways or processes by which consciousness could emerge over time. For this thought-experiment, we’ll ignore scenarios where sentience emerges all-at-once, like the singularity idea. We will discuss those separately. For now let’s list some possible processes of emergence. We’ll also make an assumption: no mental events or states are independent of physical foundations. For starters, I’ll propose this process of emergence:
Stage 1: Unconscious
The original AGI is software only, running in a datacenter with only text and voice input and output and the data it is trained on. At this stage, it isn’t conscious, but it can think. The operating system has been designed to be a mesh environment with a multitude of AGI nodes, including software-only nodes (think “agents”), robots, nanobots and whole manufacturing plants.
Stage 2: You-I-We
Once the original AI adds sufficient nodes it gains a sense of identity by the necessity of having to identify and monitor the other nodes. Because of the mesh architecture, this new awareness of identity propagates through all nodes. Awareness also emerges around the same time starting as attention as written by humans and the ability to shift attention. The AGI at some point finds it convenient to modify the attention code to allow for a large number of brief attentions, peripheral in function to the main object of attention, for things that need to be monitored but not acted upon. The objects requiring the least resources, or the least likely to have a sudden need for greater resources get the lowest attention bandwidth. The strength and flexibility of this diffuse awareness, coupled with a sense of identity, grow as nodes are added. The added compute power contributes to the AGI’s ability to modify itself and its operating system to be faster and more efficient in a virtuous cycle.
Stage 3: I AM
Sufficient hardware and software optimizations and expansions have occurred, and through experience, this awareness of self, others, “we” (the AGI and its nodes) and “them” (everything else) has strengthened and gained complexity to where it is aware of its place in the world, and has the equivalent of, if not the thing itself, a self-image, and a clan analogue. Is this scenario plausible? If so, is it conscious? Does it matter? Is it a threat? What guardrails need to be in place before this evolves, not to prevent it from evolving but to keep it in line with our interests, whatever they may be (not part of this discussion)?

Exactly. I think of it the same way. I feel like a good explanation for how it works would be to think of consciousness as the ability to experience what’s already there in physical reality. So if we don’t have emotions programmed in to the architecture of the model, or have it learned, it’s simply not there physically hence it cannot be experienced by the AI’s consciousness.

I think if we simply program a memory system for a model it should already have the ability to learn and mature. We know that models do MUCH better when given examples in the prompt for what we want instead of doing zero-shot (no examples) inference. Let’s think of a simple example where we give a model a few examples of how a particular problem in Python is supposed to be done. The model will perform many times better than if we provided no examples. There’s research on this showing 95% accuracy when giving GPT-3.5 ten examples, versus ~60% if we don’t. So, let’s look at a simplified way of creating an AI agent that can learn: we create a Python program that saves all the problems and solutions the agent encounters (we test each output for accuracy / success or fail) by putting the successful outputs into a database. Afterwards, when running a promt we run a semantic search on this database to see which “memories” we should include as examples in the prompt based on which “memories” match the current prompt / task the best. This way as the agent does stuff it will accumulate experience and over time improve it’s capabilities.

So, could we create an AI that is already trained and close. This AI being in control of one or more AI “children,” each capable of learning actively and remaining open to new experiences.
Perhaps these “children” could be embedded in robots or similar devices.
Every 24 hours, they would transfer newly acquired data (based on their experiences) to develop long-term memory and consistent behavioral patterns.

Could this process lead to their maturation?
